From Africa to darkest Surrey

I photographed Zimbabwean sculptor Biggie Chikodzi, artist in residence at The Sculpture Park in Churt, Surrey, to launch an African sculpture auction.

The Sculpture Park is a dream-like place full of odd sculptures in idyllic woodland near Farnham.

Biggie has been working here for four months.

He has an amazing ability to turn rough stone into polished liquid sculptures that look like metal.

Zimbabwe is the only country in Africa where artists make sculptures out of local stones. In fact the country’s name means ‘Houses of Stone’ in the Karanga dialect of Shona.

This piece is by Edward Chiwawa.

My favourite piece is Raw Beauty by his son, Vengai Chiwawa.
